Glacier Bay and Gustavus, Alaska

Hi all,
During Tim's visit to Alaska in July, we spent part of the time hanging out in Skagway together, and the rest of the time we toured southeast Alaska. The earlier posts included details about our time in Skagway, Haines and the Canadian Yukon.

After our visit to Haines, we took the Alaskan ferry to Juneau -- interestingly enough, it happened to be the Matanuska -- the same ferry which brought me to Skagway from Bellingham, Washington. That was cool because it gave Tim a chance to see what I'd been talking about earlier and to experience it himself during the six-hour trip between Haines and Juneau.

Juneau is the capital of Alaska, and as far as I know, it's the only US state capital that cannot be accessed via road from another town or city. As with many towns in southeast Alaska, there is no road to Juneau -- it can be accessed from the rest of Alaska via air or boat only. The famous Mendenhall Glacier is also located near Juneau and can be seen from the sea as you approach Juneau on the Alaskan Marine Highway and from the air.

After a brief overnight stay in downtown Juneau, we took a city bus to the airport and flew on a small airline to Gustavus in beautiful Glacier Bay National Park. Glacier Bay is a large region of southeast Alaska that encompasses fjords, mountains, rivers and of course glaciers. Even pictures can't do the region justice. We spent two nights at Glacier Bay lodge and enjoyed the seminars taught there by the on site park service rangers. We also took a wonderful day-long boat trip into glacier bay to view the fjords, wildlife (bears, eagles, puffins, sea otters, whales and mountain goats) and to watch the glaciers calving into the iceberg laden frigid waters. It was beautiful.

Perhaps it's best to just let the photos speak for themselves. In addition to those shown here, there are many more photos of this and other portions of our travels on the photo blog (there are now 7 Alaska photo albums on the photo blog).

The photo blog address is:

(Note: Click on the above link to access the photo blog, and from there click on the green Continue button to go to the first album, then scroll to the bottom of the page to see the Table of Contents where you can click on any of the 7 albums links). Enjoy! And I look forward to seeing any photos you'd like to share too!

Until next time, all the best! Carla
